Could Love Be a Foundation to Your WHY and Brand?

Some of us, like me, are given the gift of parenting a child in middle school. Like most parents find, my child constantly surprises me with his talents and strengths. Often parents feel like anthropologists- conducting field studies or gathering clues to our child’s passions as they naturally try one thing after another. Our love wants to see them happy so we often follow along sharing what we can. When your child is doing what they love and you share this passion, world renowned researcher Dr. Barbara Fredrickson would say positivity resonance is taking place. According to Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, positive emotions present scientific evidence that love is not what we think it is. It is not a long-lasting yearning and passion that characterizes young love or sustains a marriage and it is not the blood-tie of kinship. Rather, it is what she calls a “micro-moment of positivity resonance.” This connection is characterized by a flood of positive emotions which you share with another person—any other person—whom you happen to connect with in the course of your day. You can experience these micro-moments with your romantic partner, child, close friend and clients! Unlike some of the other positive emotions, like joy or happiness, love cannot be kindled individually. Love exists in the physical connection between two people. Specifically, there are three players in the biological love system: mirror neurons, oxytocin, and vagal tone. Each involves connection and each contributes to those micro-moments of positivity resonance that Fredrickson calls love. Experiencing positive emotion, like love, broadens people’s minds and builds their resourcefulness in ways that help them become more resilient to adversity while effortlessly achieving what once they could only imagine.

Who would not want that in business and in life?

Can love help you see new possibilities, bounce back from setbacks, and connect with 0thers? Will love help you become the best version of yourself and attract all you need in business? Apparently it is a great foundation!

We naturally follow what our kids love with hopes our support provides them with the groundwork they need! Many of us are leaders in and out of organizations who often forget that to lead others we need, like our kids, a foundation of… dare I say love? Once we have this foundation we can gift this to others.

As adult leaders we often forget to exercise loving kindness toward ourselves! Our inner critics and society keep us on the treadmill where we serve from an empty bucket. Sometimes creating our personal brands from power, money and even fear, keeps us stuck in the old paradigm. The results often lead to burnout, disengagement, misalignment, and frustration, just to name a few. Is this something you would want for someone you love?

I believe leaders need to start with self-love and lead from the inside out. Most leaders and companies start, think, act, and communicate from the outside in. With the increase of scientific evidence in the study of how our brains work we may want to “rethink” how we lead and attract our clients. According to Simon Sineck, it appears to be the complete opposite. Consciously or not, most organizations or people think, act or communicate from the outside in, from WHAT to WHY.

We often say WHAT we do and how we do it but we rarely say WHY we do what we do.

WHY does your company exist? WHY do you get out of bed every morning? And WHY should anyone care?
Starting with WHY is what Simon coined the Golden Circle. This alternative perspective is very useful for changing the world; this is a practical application for the ability to inspire too. It can be used as a guide to vastly improve leadership, corporate cultures, sales, marketing, branding and taking mindful loving time to reflect on your why. Imagine the power of knowing your why and gaining feedback and validation from others. And it all starts from the inside out and it all starts with why.

Your Why is not to make a profit. It’s your purpose, your cause, and your belief.

Simon asks, “Why is Apple so innovative year after year?” Simon advises we should help our clients understand what we believe! Apple believes in “thinking differently.” That is a value and belief.

Another factor we must not forget is the WHO behind the WHY.

I believe your WHY comes from loving yourself enough to slow down to emerge strong with an authentic leadership brand message. I believe in creating space for leaders to gift themselves with loving kindness so that they can serve others from this energy.

I aspire to be and work with authentic brands that are an expression of their why, loving passions, strengths, talents, and essence intersecting with company and industry values and needs. When leaders start with this foundation, it often develops an unwavering confidence in their market, organization, and joint venture(s).

So perhaps love, could be a foundation to your WHY and Brand?
